Saivites believe that Kailaya a part of Himalaya mountains is the abode of God Sivan. Ravana, the King of Lanka played violin to please Sivan from the bottom of Kailasa and received boons from Sivan. He then tried to lift the Kailasa mountain and take it to Lanka. God Sivan pressed his toe and Ravana’s legs caught under Kailasa. Once again, Ravana had to play the violin for an extended period to be freed from Kailasa. This festival makes the devotees to understand the magnanimity and kindness of God Siva.
