Ottawa Sivan Temple Thiruvila
Annual Festivals Celebrating Tradition, Devotion, and Community.

Introduction
Ottawa Sivan Temple, a revered sanctuary dedicated to Lord Shiva, stands as a beacon of spiritual solace and cultural heritage. Located in the heart of Ottawa,
Capital of Canada, the temple is not only an architectural marvel but also a hub of vibrant festivities that attract devotees and tourists alike. The annual festivals of Sivan Temple, known as Thiruvila, are celebrated annually from the first Friday of July for 12 days, with grandeur and devotion, offering a glimpse into the rich
traditions and religious fervor of Temples in Srilanka.

Significance of Thiruvila

Thiruvila, derived from the Tamil word “Thiru” meaning “holy” and “Vila” meaning “festival,” embodies the essence of sacred celebrations. These annual festivals are a time for devotees to come together to honor Lord Shiva, seek his blessings, and partake in various religious and cultural activities. The celebrations are marked by elaborate rituals, vibrant processions, and a deep sense of community spirit.

Utsavam is an important part of the temple rituals. Utsavam is the procession of the Lord worshipped in the sanctum sanctorum and procession in the Outer Court (Veli Veedhi) along with the surrounding deities.  The Agamas declare this work as utsavam because it brings about the creation of the world by adding ut means creation and savam means Srishti (formation). There are other Agamas which say that one gives knowledge and gives liberation through that knowledge of Siva. This special puja is performed also to remove the shortcomings in the daily puja.

The need of the festival is that it is a uttama yajna as special pujas have to be performed in temples along with homam and balidanam. Utsavam, also known as the festival, is the Panchakritya of creation, preservation, destruction, concealment and blessing of the Lord for all living beings. The Agamas say that Utsavam is the festival that bestows a life of happiness and supreme liberation to the innumerable beings living in the 84 lakh deha types in the world.

The festival is also mentioned in the twelve Tirumurai books in Tamil hymns. In particular, the temple festival is mentioned in the Periyapuranam and Thirugnanasambandhamurti Nayanar Puranam. While fixing the festival, the Sun, the Moon, the star, the king’s star and the consecration day are fixed according to one or the other method.

This glorious festival is celebrated in the month of July in our Shiva temple located in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. Homam and Mahotsavam will be celebrated in a grand manner and special pujas will be performed to remove the obstacles.

Rituals and Practices

The annual festivals at Ottawa Sivan Temple are characterized by a series of elaborate rituals and practices. These rituals are performed with utmost devotion and precision, reflecting the deep-rooted traditions of the temple.

Abhishekam

The Abhishekam, or ritual bathing of the Shiva Linga, is a central ritual during the festivals. The Shiva Linga is bathed with various sacred substances such as milk, honey, ghee, curd, and holy water. Each substance is believed to have a specific significance, symbolizing purification and the bestowal of divine blessings. The chanting of Vedic hymns and mantras during the Abhishekam creates an aura of spirituality and reverence.

Alankaram

Alankaram, the elaborate decoration of the Shiva Linga and the temple, is another significant ritual. The Shiva Linga is adorned with flowers, garlands, and precious ornaments, enhancing its divine beauty. The temple premises are decorated with intricate designs and colorful lights, adding to the festive spirit. The Alankaram ritual is a visual treat for the devotees, reflecting their love and devotion towards Lord Shiva.

Poojas and Archanas

Special poojas (prayer ceremonies) and archanas (offering of flowers and prayers) are conducted during the festivals. These rituals are performed by the temple priests, invoking the blessings of Lord Shiva for the well-being and prosperity of the devotees. The chanting of sacred hymns and the sound of temple bells create a divine ambiance, filling the hearts of the devotees with peace and joy.

Cultural Programs and Community Activities

The annual festivals at Ottawa Sivan Temple are not just about religious rituals; they are also a celebration of culture and community. Various cultural programs and community activities are organized during the festivals, bringing people together and fostering a sense of unity and harmony.

Music and Dance Performances

Classical music and dance performances are an integral part of the festival celebrations. Renowned artists and local talents perform traditional art forms such  as Bharatanatyam, Carnatic music, and devotional songs, captivating the audience with their skill and devotion. These cultural programs not only entertain the devotees but also preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Community Feasts

Community feasts, known as Annadanam, are organized during the festivals, where food is served to all devotees, regardless of their social or economic status. The practice of Annadanam reflects the spirit of sharing and caring, promoting the values of compassion and generosity. Devotees and volunteers come together to prepare and serve the food, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and goodwill.

Charity and Social Initiatives

The temple authorities and devotees also undertake various charity and social initiatives during the festivals by conducting educational programs for children. These initiatives embody the principle of “Seva” (selfless service), emphasizing the importance of giving back to society and helping those in need.
