“Hunger is universal; it knows no religion. Every living being, from the smallest ant to the largest elephant, is a slave to hunger.
It is often said that the face of God can be seen in the smile of a person who has been fed. We feel deeply gratified to be able to satisfy the hunger of so many people—it’s truly the most fulfilling feeling in the world.”
Annathaanam: In Tamil, “Thaanam” means “giving freely,” and Annathaanam—the act of offering food—is considered the highest form of charity. Among all charitable deeds, feeding the hungry stands above others because while clothing, shelter, and education improve the quality of life, food sustains life itself.
Hunger is an impatient visitor, arriving regularly and demanding immediate attention. It saps the body’s energy, paralyzes action, and ultimately threatens life itself. It is no wonder hunger is often referred to as the worst kind of illness, and food is its only cure.
Annadhanam symbolizes the view that life is precious, and by feeding others, we help sustain that life. Sharing food is sharing life, which is why Annadhanam is sometimes called Jeevandhan—the gift of life.
